EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

  • UST 10Y dealers stepped ELEVATED to EXTREME SHORT, the board’s one extreme dealer reading, while the 5Y released ELEVATED to MODERATE SHORT. The 10Y dealer z is -2.19 at the 1.9th percentile, with asset managers holding the long (AM z +2.41). The dealer options book leans the opposite way (OptZ +1.26), so the futures extreme is partly offset in options, not a clean one-way position; measured 4-week realized vol after weeks in this regime ran 0.99x the all-week average (n=61), so no vol amplification shows in this market’s history. 5Y dealers covered +67,574 contracts, an event z of +1.64 for a post-OpEx week.
  • Leveraged funds hold the range extremes in the 2Y, the 30Y and the euro, but the Treasury books are still net short outright. 2Y leveraged funds stepped ELEVATED to EXTREME LONG (lev z +2.07, net -1,285,548) and the 30Y book held EXTREME LONG (lev z +2.20); both describe shorts lighter than usual, not longs. Euro leveraged funds hold an EXTREME SHORT (lev z -2.12, 0.0th percentile) alongside net short dealers, so the euro long sits with asset managers. SOFR dealers, who hold a net long, released ELEVATED to MODERATE LONG (dealer z +1.40) while leveraged funds hold the short; the options book leans the opposite way (OptZ -3.10).
  • Commodity hedgers moved up a tier in Gold and WTI. Gold and WTI Commercials both stepped MODERATE to ELEVATED LONG (Commercials z +1.54 and +1.64); Gold Commercials are still net short (-13,581) but less than usual, while WTI Commercials are genuinely net long (+368,955). Copper Commercials released MODERATE SHORT to NEUTRAL on an event z of +2.00. Silver and Natural Gas Managed Money stepped to ELEVATED SHORT on the z measure (-1.52 and -1.78), though Silver Managed Money is still net long outright (+3,746).
  • Elsewhere the board rotated inside moderate bands. GBP dealers released ELEVATED to MODERATE LONG (dealer z +1.99 to +1.49, event z -1.52) and CHF dealers released MODERATE LONG to NEUTRAL (event z -1.66); AUD and MXN dealers extended four-week builds against asset managers at range lows (AM z -2.84 and -2.31). Russell 2000 dealers released MODERATE LONG to NEUTRAL (event z -2.76), Nasdaq dealers added shorts at an unusual pace (flow z -2.34) and Bitcoin dealers hold a thin structural long at the 0.0th percentile of its range (dealer z -1.86). The equity average z is -0.11. Board stress: 4 of 24 groups at |z| above 1.5.
  • Catalyst line: FOMC (Oct 28, 5 days) lands on the Treasury dealer and leveraged books and SOFR; PCE (Oct 29, 6 days) and NFP (Nov 6, 14 days) fall inside the 14-day horizon and add to the front end and dollar books; CPI (Nov 10, 18 days) sits outside it.

No tracked macro release landed in the window; FOMC, PCE, NFP and CPI all remain ahead. Headlines describe a rocky, tech-led week for equities and bond traders backing off Fed rate-hike bets, which fits the equity and VIX moves and the Treasury futures rally. This is price action after the Tuesday snapshot; none of it confirms dealer, leveraged fund or asset manager repositioning, and the next positioning data is not visible until next week’s report.

POSITIONING DYNAMICS

Rates (UST 2Y, UST 5Y, UST 10Y, UST 30Y, SOFR 3M)

The curve’s dealer stress sits at the long end this week: the 10Y stepped up into the board’s one extreme dealer short while the belly eased and the 2Y held its moderate short. Asset managers hold the duration long at every tenor, and the dealer options book leans against the 10Y futures stretch, so the futures short is partly
offset in options rather than a clean one-way position. Leveraged funds are net short outright across the 2Y, 5Y, 10Y and 30Y, so the 2Y, 5Y and 30Y readings describe shorts that are lighter than usual, not leveraged longs, and the Treasury tension is a gap between two short books rather than opposed positions. The 2Y and 5Y leveraged nets have grown shorter week by week from the high end of their ranges, an unwind in progress; the 30Y leveraged net keeps rising toward flat while still short. Small traders in the 2Y sit at the washed-out low end of their range.

SOFR is the one rates book with genuinely opposed outright positions: leveraged funds hold the short and dealers hold the long. Dealer SOFR net has fallen four straight weeks, a large share of the leveraged gross sits in spread structures so its directional read overstates conviction, and the options book leans the opposite way, so the dealer long is partly offset in options.

FX (USD Index, EUR, JPY, GBP, AUD, CAD, CHF, MXN)

The euro and sterling carry the FX story inside a dollar picture that is mixed rather than uniform. Euro leveraged funds hold the board’s FX range extreme short and dealers are net short as well, so they sit on the same side and the long sits with asset managers; this is not a counterparty standoff, and dealers have raised their euro net for four straight weeks, meaning a lighter short. The dollar cross-check mostly coheres: speculators short the euro and modestly long the dollar index is one dollar-supportive lean, while asset managers are long the dollar index and long the euro at once, which looks like hedging rather than a view. Dealers are net short the dollar index.

Sterling dealers hold a genuine long and released a tier on unusually heavy flow for the post-OpEx phase; leveraged funds are long outright alongside them and asset managers carry the short, so dealers and leveraged funds are not opposed. Franc dealers thinned to neutral on similar flow while the leveraged short eased. CAD and yen sat quiet. AUD and MXN dealers extended four-week builds against asset managers at range lows, which in currencies often reflects hedging rather than a directional view; leveraged funds sit on the dealer side of both.

Historical analogs: 5 prior MODERATE LONG episodes for the euro (2024-05-07 to 2026-06-23) were bullish in 3 of 5 over 4 weeks with a median 4-week return of +0.3%, against an unconditional base rate of -0.2% median and 47% bullish across all 885 weeks, with no clear deviation. 5 prior MODERATE LONG episodes for sterling (2025-12-16 to 2026-09-08) were bullish in 3 of 5 with a median of +0.1%, against a base rate of +0.0% median and 51% bullish across all 885 weeks, which is unremarkable. Both windows are anchored to the Tuesday snapshot.

Commodities (Gold, Silver, WTI Crude, Copper, Natural Gas)

This is positioning state only. Gold Commercials moved up a tier but remain net short, a hedge lighter than their norm, against Managed Money long outright. WTI Commercials are genuinely net long, unusual for a hedger book, and Managed Money is long alongside them, so hedgers and speculators sit on the same side of crude; Managed Money stepped to neutral. Copper Commercials released to neutral on unusually heavy flow for the event phase while Managed Money also eased to neutral. Silver Managed Money sits at the low end of its range but is still net long, so the reading reflects a thin speculative long against Commercials running less short than usual. Natural Gas Managed Money sits at the short end of its range while Commercials are neutral and Swap Dealers hold a range-high long; nearly half of Managed Money gross is spread structure, so its directional read overstates conviction.

Equities (S&P 500, Nasdaq, Russell 2000)

Equities rotated inside a moderate band. Russell 2000 dealers released to neutral on unusually heavy flow for the event phase; they hold a genuine long, and leveraged funds are still net short but eased to neutral. Nasdaq dealers added short exposure at an unusual pace; dealers and leveraged funds are both net short outright (the leveraged “long” reading is a lighter-than-usual short), so the long sits with asset managers and this is not a standoff. VIX shows low protection demand, with asset managers deep vol sellers; the leveraged book is heavy in spread structures, so its directional read overstates conviction. The S&P 500 is quiet: dealers remain less short than usual despite heavy OpEx-phase flow, with the leveraged short easing to neutral.

Historical analogs: 5 prior MODERATE SHORT episodes for the Nasdaq (2025-10-07 to 2026-09-15) were bullish in 4 of 5 over 4 weeks with a median 4-week return of +2.2%, against an unconditional base rate of +1.8% median and 67% bullish across all 885 weeks, which is unremarkable. The window is anchored to the Tuesday snapshot.

Crypto (Bitcoin, Ether)

Bitcoin dealers run a structural long, so the reading means the long has thinned to the bottom of its two-year range while the net stays positive. Leveraged funds are net short outright, at the high end of their own range, so the dealer-versus-leveraged extreme pairing describes a lighter-than-usual leveraged short against a thin dealer long. The options book is neutral, so nothing in options offsets the futures reading. Ether dealers sit at neutral, so the intra-crypto gap stays Bitcoin-specific.

Natural Gas (Comm / MM) 2.86-3.19 3.05 +0.3% 2.83-3.12 +1.7%

The Nasdaq and Russell 2000 trade below both their dealer and leveraged zones, while the S&P 500 trades above both. VIX, WTI crude and copper trade above their dealer or Commercial zones, and gold and silver sit below theirs; gold trades inside the Managed Money zone, WTI inside its Managed Money zone and silver below it. Bitcoin sits inside its dealer zone and above the leveraged zone, and Ether and natural gas sit inside both. These are descriptive P&L facts about the aggregate books, not triggers.

BOTTOM LINE

Into the Oct 28 FOMC, the Treasury positioning to size around is the 10Y dealer short, partly offset by an opposing options book, with the 2Y and 30Y leveraged “longs” understood as lighter shorts; in FX, the euro leveraged short is the one crowd at a range extreme, with asset managers holding the long.
